ESET NOD32 v3

December 25th, 2007   (3273 views )

I went ahead and purchased ESET's NOD32 version 3. It has a little larger footprint than the older version, but it is still small in comparison to other front-runners. Get the business version if you do not want the entire suite with a firewall, etc.

I can tell you that it is fast and reliable. It helped me clean a kids laptop that was infected with Vuntu, a task that Symantec could not do. Updates are fast and always on time (every hour, by default). It catches spyware, even ones that seem harmless. This product has my vote.

The business version comes with a central console that you can push installs, updates and even uninstall the clients with. All told, a very worthy product.

They have a trial version you can download, so go see for yourself.

Thanks for this post. We are now currently evaluating NOD32 for our SBS. So far, very impressive. However, I am uncertain how to properly configure the NOD32 firewall on the SBS box. We are testing the "ESET Smart Security" suite. Do you have any suggestions?

I understand (though I have not used the Suite) that it basically 'NATs' everything through the NOD32 firewall. This is why I chose the business version over the suite with included f/w. I was unsure how the f/w would behave with Exchange, et.al.
From what I have read, there is a way (in the full config tree) to 'whitelist' certain traffic from the f/w. I know in the business edition you can force certain applications to be seen as mail clients, and similarly you should be able to force Exchange, etc. to be omitted in this manner in the suite product.

I read a number of blogs and support forums before I commited to this product, and this is one of the issues they were having with the suite, although the more advanced users claimed there was a way around this issue.

Unfortunately, I do not have the experience with the suite, but do let me know if you continue to have problems. I am affiliated with the company now and I am sure I can get you some answers.
